Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson made a bold statement at Sunday’s media day when he said that he would beat Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt in a 40-yard sprint, according to USA Today Sports:

“I’ve watched him run, and I’m pretty sure I can beat him in a 40-yard dash,” the Heisman hopeful said at Michigan’s media day on Sunday. “I’d get a better start, and I could take him.

At 60 yards, Robinson said he’d be in trouble and at 100 yards, he said he wouldn’t stand a chance against Bolt.

In 2010, as a member of Michigan’s Track & Field team, Robinson ran a 60-meter dash in 6.81 seconds. By comparison, in the 100-meter race at the 2009 World Athletics Championship, Bolt had ran the first 60-meters in 6.31 seconds.

Robinson, who is now in his senior year at Michigan, recorded 1,176 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. He had 1,702 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2010.

These football guys talking trash about being able to take Bolt in the 40 are delusional. He has a mediocre start ... by world-class sprinter standards. Even the fastest corners in the league aren't up to that standard. The fastest 40 ever put up at the combine is Chris Johnson's 4.24. Walter Dix is a good world-class sprinter, and put up what most people claim was around a 4.1 40 (see youtube). Of course, he claimed it was a 3.75, but whatever. And Dix is a better 200m runner than 100. Bolt has usually pretty much caught up to the best sprinters in history by 40-45 yards. I.e. his top end speed has already made up for his start by 40 yards in. Bolt in peak condition is likely capable of a 4.0 to 4.1 forty - i.e. he would annihilate any football player who's ever lived.

@Alistair2 "He (Bo Jackson) also ran a 40-yard dash in 4.12 seconds (hand-timed), which is still the fastest verifiable 40-yard dash time ever recorded at any NFL Combine.[2][3]"

@Alistair2 You are so right.  Robinson has no shot at beating Bolt at any sprint.  He's truly the fastest man in the world!  The only question is how long will he compete?

@ConeS2 Chris Johnson's 4.24 is the fastest _electronically_ timed 40 at the combine. They don't count the old hand timings towards the official records. Considering that Bo was an absolute freak of nature, I'll acknowledge that he might have been capable of a 4.12 (though do note that hand-timings not only have a greater margin of error, but tend to be quicker). I still expect Bolt would be faster, but over 40 yards, I'm prepared to exempt Bo from "annihilation" ;-)
