Tyrann Mathieu kicked off LSU football team
The player known as “Honey Badger” is no longer an LSU Tiger.
LSU Head Coach Les Miles announced this afternoon in a press conference that cornerback Tyrann Mathieu has been dismissed from the team due to violations of team policy. Miles did not go into detail as to what these violations could entail, but the suspension appears to have been inside knowledge before the press conference – ESPN’s Joe Schad reports that those close to Mathieu have already begun looking for another place for him to play this season.
That search may be a tough one. Mathieu is still too young to join an NFL team as an undrafted free agent, and NCAA rules dictate that he is ineligible for any Division I school as well.
Mathieu was suspended for one game last season after testing positive for synthetic marijuana. His dismissal is a devastating blow to the LSU defense, who counted Mathieu as their most experienced player in the secondary. Mathieu was a Heisman trophy finalist last season and was expected to be named a preseason All-American.
