Report: Red Sox bring back OF Scott Podsednik

Outfielder Scott Podsednik made the most of his first stint with the Boston Red Sox, hitting .387 in 70 plate appearances. But due to an outfielder surplus when Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford returned from injury, Boston threw Podsednik into the Matt Albers-Craig Breslow deal at the trade deadline.

The Arizona Diamondbacks waived Podsednik two days later after he declined a minor-league assignment, and now Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com reports that Boston is bringing Podsednik back east on a major league deal.

The Red Sox have two of their reserve outfielders, Ryan Sweeney and Daniel Nava, on the DL (Sweeney for the rest of the season), so they needed more depth. Nick Cafardo of the Boston Glove reports that Boston will send youngster Ryan Kalish back to Pawtucket, so the Sox may also have wanted a more veteran presence as their fourth outfielder.
