Marc Gasol of the Memphis Grizzlies will get an opportunity this NBA preseason to play against some of his current Olympic teammates and the rest of the Real Madrid team from his native Spain, according to the Grizzlies’ website.
Memphis is set to open up their preseason at home in the Fed Ex Forum against Real Madrid on October 6 at 7 p.m.
Madrid’s roster got a boost this offseason from Rudy Fernandez, who announced in July that he will leave the NBA to play for Madrid. The team also has Sergio Rodriguez, who spent four seasons in the NBA before returning to Spain in 2010. Both of them are currently on Spain’s Olympic basketball team with Gasol.
The Grizzlies’ preseason home game against Real Madrid isn’t the only example of the NBA making more of an effort recently to extend its reach internationally. The league announced in July that the Orlando Magic and New Orleans Hornets will play a preseason game in Mexico City on October 7, a night after the Grizzlies host Real Madrid. Gustavo Ayon of the Orlando Magic will get to play in his native Mexico against the Hornets, his former NBA team.
