Report: Dwight Howard to skip own youth basketball camp

Dwight Howard will not attend his annual youth basketball camp in Orlando, reports the Orlando Sentinel‘s Mike Bianchi.

The Magic center, who has been the subject of trade rumors throughout the offseason, typically attends the camp that bears his name. But this year, in what will likely be an unpopular move, he will skip the event. Andrew Nicholson, Orlando’s first-round pick in the NBA Draft, will replace Howard.

Camp members pay a $199 fee to attend. While they will still receive the same level of instruction from the coaches at the camp, the chance to meet Howard, Orlando’s best-known player, was likely one of the motivating factors for many to attend.

Howard, who will reportedly stay in Los Angeles to continue rehabbing his injured back, will almost certainly receive criticism for the decision. He has been criticized for the way he has handled his trade demands, and this decision could further hurt his popularity.

Where did Dwight Howard go?  The Dwight Howard who seemed so genuinely happy and thankful to basketball for what the sport had provided him.  The Dwight Howard that seemed to embrace the fans with the same exuberance as they showed him.  "Superman" seems to have choked on his cape and the new Dwight Howard has emerged a petulant spoiled brat so self-absorbed in his importance that any semblance of decency or loyalty has vanished.  As a Magic fan since their inception, I've been witness to Shaq leaving Orlando for the bright lights and stardom outside the realm of basketball.  Lights that only a New York or Hollywood could provide.  That desertion was easier to understand and swallow than the cut throat and mean spirited exodus being orchestrated by Howard.  The bridges burned by Dwight Howard will not be easily extinguished.  As Howard scurries to and fro trying to find a place to roost that isn't Orlando, he isn't blowing out the candles on the cake that has been his career with the Magic.....he is pissing on them.  Dwight Howard....................GOOD RIDDANCE!

@gwilliamireland new york believe me if you been following ball this long is no place to claim we have ANY elite status. the only thing elite here in nyc are the people at cablevision who rely on the corporate types to fill the garden. howard was my favorite player but after this...not so much.

"Dwightmare" is about ten MILLION times worse than "The Decision" and even Howard win a NBA title, his image is permanently hurt. There has been a lot of bad, bad decisions and skipping his own camp because he just wants to run away (again) is one more to his collection.
