Michael Irvin wants Bill Belichick’s name added to Lombardi Trophy
Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin won three Super Bowls and thinks the NFL should consider renaming the trophy winners of the biggest game of the season receive.
Irvin said there is only one name that he would consider adding to the trophy: New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. Lombardi’s name was added to the trophy in 1970.
“I think the world of Belichick,” Irvin said to The Boston Herald. “I told him this, ‘Man, if it was up to me, that trophy would be called the Lombardi/Belichick. I don’t care what they think. It would be called the Lombardi/Belichick. That’s how good he is to do what he’s doing in this day and age, what the league is now. I would call it the Lombardi/Belichick.”
Belichick, who is 139-53 in the regular season and 16-6 in the playoffs, was the first coach to win three NFL championships in four seasons.
