Penn State transfer: Linebacker Khairi Fortt to Cal

Uncategorized

Penn State linebacker Khairi Fortt will transfer to the University of California, the Stamford Advocate‘s Dave Ruden reports on Twitter.

Fortt, a junior, may not have much of an impact on the Golden Bears this season. Ruden reports that Fortt is still recovering from knee surgery and may have to redshirt.

Fortt had 33 tackles, six for a loss, and 2.5 sacks last season as a sophomore.

In a statement tweeted in parts by Ruden, Fortt explained his thought process.

“Basically I wanted to take a leap of faith and trust in God,” Fortt said. “This is what’s right for me and my family. The way you go through life is the way you handle adversity. The friends I’ve made here are friends for life. Some people have different paths.

“Coach O’Brien and his staff have brought a whole new energy. It has been a great seven months. They have improved the intensity a lot. It’s just unfortunate I have a different route I have to take. This is no disrespect to them or a reflection on Coach O’Brien.”

Penn State players have started to leave the program this week. Tight end Kevin Haplea left for Florida State, safety Tim Buckley went to N.C. State and, most notably, star running back Silas Redd transferred to USC.
