Report: Antawn Jamison, Elton Brand and Jermaine O’Neal on Lakers’ short list
Fresh off signing two-time MVP Steve Nash to a three-year deal worth approximately $27 million, the Los Angeles Lakers are now reportedly looking to upgrade their frontcourt by signing one of three players on the market: the Cavs’ Antawn Jamison; Elton Brand, who was recently amnestied by the Philadelphia 76ers; and the Celtics’ Jermaine O’Neal, according to Dave McMenamin of ESPNLosAngeles.com:
[A]ppearing on the Lakers’ “short list” of names they are hoping to add to the roster for the veteran’s minimum are Antawn Jamison, Elton Brand and Jermaine O’Neal, according to a source familiar with the team’s thinking.
Jamison is arguably the most coveted of the three, as McMenamin reports that Brooklyn, Golden State and Charlotte are also trying to land the 36-year-old forward, and the Nets are reportedly his preference. Though he shot a career-low 40-percent from the field last season for the Cavs, he proved that he can still be effective, averaging 17.2 points and 6.3 rebounds. The 2009-10 season was his first with the Cavs, who were then coached by Lakers current head coach Mike Brown.
Brand, meanwhile, will reportedly also be pursued by Dallas.
O’Neal played in only 25 games last season for the Celtics before requiring wrist surgery. McMenamin reports that the Lakers think signing him could be worth it if he can be healthy for training camp.
