Nationals’ Bryce Harper added to NL All-Star team roster

Major League Baseball announced Saturday night that young phenom Bryce Harper was added to the National League’s All-Star Game roster, replacing the injured Giancarlo Stanton.

At 19 years of age, the Washington Nationals outfielder Harper is the youngest positional player to ever make an All-Star roster. Harper is batting .283 with eight homers and 25 RBI in 62 games this season. He has an .831 OPS.

The Marlins announced Saturday that Stanton will have surgery on his right knee Sunday and will be out for four to six weeks.

Harper finished behind both St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese and Atlanta Braves outfielder Michael Bourn in MLB’s final vote. Earlier on Saturday, MLB announced that Bourn would replace injured Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond on the NL team. Harper was the next in line after Stanton’s injury on Saturday.
