Veteran point guard Derek Fisher, a five-time NBA champion who made the Finals with the Oklahoma City Thunder this season, would consider signing with the Brooklyn Nets, reports the New York Times‘ Howard Beck.

Beck reports there are five “front-runners” to sign Fisher: the Thunder, Nets, Chicago Bulls, Dallas Mavericks and Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Bulls and Thunder are expected to contend next season, which would seem to make them good fits if the 37-year-old Fisher is looking for a run at a sixth NBA title. Fisher played more than 20 minutes per game in the postseason with the Thunder this year. His experience helped make him a key part of the rotation for the young team.

The Mavericks are expected to struggle some next season. They still have star Dirk Nowitzki, but much of his supporting cast, including guards Jason Kidd and Jason Terry, is no longer on the team.

The Cavaliers are in rebuilding mode, and Fisher would back up Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving at point guard. Cleveland would likely be happy if it made the postseason, but many experts think the Cavs are still a few years away from having a chance to contend.

The Nets are the wild card. With the re-signing of point guard Deron Williams and the trade for shooting guard Joe Johnson, Brooklyn is expected to make progress this season. But barring a trade for Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, the team isn’t expected to be a title contender.

Fisher averaged 5.6 points and 2.7 assists per game last season.
