Report: Lakers ‘are making a strong bid’ for free agent point guard Steve Nash
The Los Angeles Lakers are quietly “making a strong bid” for free agent point guard Steve Nash, a source tells David Aldridge of NBA.com.
Because the Lakers, who are well over the salary cap, can only offer Nash the mini mid-level exception, a sign-and-trade with the Phoenix Suns appears the more likely avenue for a deal, Aldridge writes. He also notes that L.A. could return Phoenix a starting point guard in Ramon Sessions.
SI.com’s Sam Amick offers his take on this report:
Regarding Nash-to-Lakers, I'd be surprised if Phoenix would be too eager to cooperate in a sign & trade with their Pacific Division rivals.—

The Toronto Raptors and the New York Knicks are the primary competitors for Nash’s services. A source told Aldridge that Nash is giving the Knicks time to put together a sign-and-trade that the Suns would accept, perhaps an indication that the Big Apple is his preference.
