Source tells me Phillies and Orioles are talking seriously about a deal involving Jim Thome. Thome still with Phils in Miami — Jim Salisbury (@JSalisburyCSN) June 30, 2012
Thome, who has been reduced to a pinch-hitting role with the Phillies in the National League, would step in as the Orioles’ designated hitter. Thome has just 10 at-bats playing at first base with the Phillies this season. In 62 at-bats this season, Thome is hitting .242 with five homers and an .854 OPS. He would be an immediate boost for the Orioles, which currently rank last in the American League East in runs scored. The Orioles are 4.5 games back of the Yankees in the AL East. Salisbury reported that Thome was still in the dugout with the Phillies for their game against the Miami Marlins on Saturday.
