Report: Deron Williams to choose between Nets, Mavericks
Right after LeBron James hoisted his first NBA championship trophy, it appears Deron Williams will have his own decision to make. According to a report from Marc Stein at ESPN, the free agent point guard will choose between his current team the Brooklyn Nets and his hometown Dallas Mavericks after NBA free agency opens on July 1.
The Phoenix Suns, Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers had all expressed interest in acquiring Williams, but Williams reportedly will choose between the myriad marketing opportunities the Nets can offer with their move to metro New York and the comforts of home with the Mavericks.
Even in finances and team building, the teams are in a dead heat – the Nets can offer Williams more money for one year more than Dallas, but Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has a better track record of building teams that consistently contend for NBA championships.
Williams played 55 games for the Nets in 2011-2012′s lockout-shortened season, putting up below-average numbers on a team that went 22-44, finishing last in the Eastern Conference’s Atlantic Division.
