Hafner has struggled some this season. He’s hitting a career-worst .242 in 39 games.
The 34-year-old is in the final season of a six-year, $66-million deal. The Indians have a $13-million option for next year.
CBS Sports reports the Indians now have seven players on the disabled list, including outfielder Grady Sizemore.
Left-handed pitcher Scott Barnes was recalled from Triple-A Columbus to take Hafner’s roster spot.
