New York Knicks center Tyson Chandler has been named the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year, ending Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard’s three-year run with the award, according to Yahoo! Sports.
The Knicks plan to make the official announcement Thursday at their practice facility before Chandler receives the award tonight prior to Game 3 against the Miami Heat.
A year ago, the Knicks ranked 21st in the NBA in defensive efficiency. This season with Chandler at the center position, the Knicks have shot up to fifth in the category. Chandler is averaging 9.9 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, and 11.3 points per game shooting an NBA-high 67 percent from the field.
Although the voting results have not been released yet, other likely top candidates include Thunder forward Serge Ibaka, Magic center Dwight Howard, Mavericks forward Shawn Marion, and Heat forward LeBron James.
