The NFL may be suspending the Pro Bowl as soon as this year, according to NBC Sports.

With the lack of effort increasingly diminishing each year, the league is in discussions on whether or not they will suspend the Pro Bowl as soon the end of this upcoming season, as reported by Chris Mortensen on ESPN Radio this morning.

In 2010, Goodell tried to help the success of the Pro Bowl by scheduling it a week before the Super Bowl.  However, this move had little to no effect on the effort demonstrated by players, and the interest from fans remained low.  The NFL has instructed teams to keep all Pro Bowl bonuses and incentives in player contracts for now.

Despite the lack of quality play each year, the event still draws in revenue with decent television ratings.  Therefore, it may be difficult for the league to convince team owners who have the power to, ultimately, make the decision to scrap the event.
