Report: Saints’ Drew Brees, Bears’ Matt Forte Skipping Offseason Workouts
Voluntary offseason workouts for various NFL teams begin tomorrow, but there are a few notable names of guys who won’t be opting in. New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte, but players who were slapped with their team’s franchise tags this winter, will both be no-shows at their teams’ workouts.

For Brees, the situation is complicated — not only have the Saints been unable to work out a long-term contract extension for the former Super Bowl MVP, but the team is anticipating starting its season without coach Sean Payton and GM Mickey Loomis, both suspended for the team’s bounty scandal. The Saints are in disarray, and their quarterback’s absence will not help matters.
For the Bears, the Forte situation is prickly too. Forte had a strong season last year and solidified his status as the Bears’ most dangerous weapon, but the team turned around and signed Michael Bush to a four-year contract last month, perhaps leading Forte to worry about his job security.
Both players, whether they work out long-term contracts or not, will play for their current teams come this fall. But the offseason might be messy for both.
