The Chicago Bears will not re-sign backup quarterback Caleb Hanie and he will become a free agent March 13, according to ESPNChicago.com.

Head coach Lovie Smith said last month that the team needed to get better at the backup quarterback position, and that Chicago is an attractive destination for free agents.

Hanie is best known for stepping in for starting quarterback Jay Cutler during the 2010 playoffs. He again replaced an injured Cutler last season throwing nine interceptions in four consecutive losses before being supplanted by Josh McCown.
