The New England Patriots are expected to place the franchise tag on wide receiver Wes Welker, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The two sides have been in discussions for a new deal, but if one isn’t reached the team will pay Welker $9.5 million and apply the franchise tag, according to Schefter.

Welker, 30, led the league in reception last season, hauling in 122 passes with nine touchdowns.
