Duerson’s Son Suing NFL Over Father’s Suicide
Tregg Duerson, the son of deceased NFL star Dave Duerson, is suing the NFL over the league’s handling of his father’s concussions, according to the New York Times.
Duerson’s claiming that the brain disease that his father developed was the result of the concussions he sustained during his playing career, which ultimately caused him to commit suicide.
Sustaining multiple concussions during his playing days in the NFL, Duerson developed chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a progressive disorder caused by repeated trauma which can lead to cognitive dysfunction, depression and lack of impulse control. The same disease is consistent in a number of former NFL players. Along with Duerson’s son, hundreds of retired NFL players, who have also acquired disorders resulting from alleged mismanaged concussions, are suing the league.
In Duerson’s ten-year NFL career, he was a four-time Pro Bowler and a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Chicago Bears and New York Giants.
