Outfielder Pat Burrell Expected To Retire

MLB

35-year old outfielder Pat Burrell will be announcing his retirement soon, according to MLB Trade Rumours.

Burrell has been battling a chronic foot injury and was not optimistic about playing in 2012 when interviewed by the Associated Press in November.

“I have not decided yet, but I don’t think I can play anymore [due to a chronic foot injury].  It hurts me to say that.”

Drafted in 1998 as a third baseman, Burrell spent the majority of his career as a left fielder.  Before finishing his career with the Rays and Giants, Burrell spent nine seasons with the Phillies hitting .257/.367/.485.  He ranks fourth all-time on the Phillies’ home run list with 251.
