The Carolina Panthers have announced on their official website that star rookie quarterback Cam Newton will represent the NFC in the Pro Bowl this coming weekend. Newton will replace Eli Manning, who will not be attending the Pro Bowl after the New York Giants clinched a Super Bowl berth in last night’s victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

Newton, the No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2011, posted a 84.5 quarterback rating while throwing for 21 touchdowns in his first season under center for Carolina. In total he set a NFL rookie record for throwing for 4,051 passing yards on the year. He also set an NFL record with 14 rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.

The 22-year-old will serve as a backup to the Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Rodgers and the New Orleans Saints’ Drew Brees.
