West Virginia Plans To Join Big 12 As Early As 2012
West Virginia may be playing games as part of the Big 12 as soon as next season, according to a story by Lenn Robbins in the New York Post.
To enact such a speedy departure, West Virginia would have to find away around a rule in Big East bylaws that requires 27 months notice before a member can leave. But according to Robbins, West Virginia officials made their intentions clear in a conference call on Friday.
“Our intent is, clearly, July 1 we will be a member of the Big 12,’’ West Virginia president Jim Clements said. “Our team and their team are in discussions about how we make that happen.’’
A Big East spokesman declined to comment, Robbins writes, but the issue extends beyond West Virginia: Pittsburgh and Syracuse are also leaving the Big East, and the conference has repeatedly said that they will be required to adhere to the 27 month rule.
